CALIFORNIA’S LEADER
IN AQUATIC BIOLOGICAL SERVICES SINCE 1988
Aquatic Bioassay & Consulting Laboratories, Inc. has been a leader in California toxicity testing and aquatic biological monitoring for over 35 years. Aquatic Bioassay provides project management, field sampling, toxicity testing, both freshwater and marine bioassessments, data management and reporting.

TOXICITY TESTING
BIOASSAY TESTING - ACUTE AND CHRONIC
AB&C's toxicity testing Laboratory has been the most successful lab on the West Coast since 1988 with clients throughout the western region of the United States and several Pacific Rim countries.
COASTAL MARINE MONITORING
AQUATIC BIOASSAY'S team of scientists have been successfully performing coastal and harbor marine monitoring surveys for many Southern and Central California industries and municipalities since 1988.
FRESHWATER WATERSHED BIOASSESSMENT
Our team of biologists can provide all the services required to successfully manage and complete freshwater bioassessment monitoring for ambient watershed, NPDES, and MS4 permittees.

LABORATORY ANALYSES
Our laboratory is ELAP certified to conduct microbiological testing for total and fecal coliforms and enterococcus bacteria. We offer taxonomic services for benthic marine, freshwater and estuarine invertebrates, as well as periphyton (algae) and ichthyoplankton
DIVE SURVEY OPERATIONS
The Aquatic Bioassay dive team has been providing professional underwater surveys for over thirty-five years. We conduct outfall inspections, biological transect studies, and invasive species surveys
BIOACCUMULATION
Aquatic Bioassay performs bioaccumulation testing for USACE dredge testing and bioassay species. Organisms are exposed to the sample for a specific time period. Once the exposure is complete organism tissues are run through analytical chemistry. Results are compared with known clean tissues.
SEDIMENT TOXICITY ANALYSIS
Bioassay testing using sediments is performed at Aquatic Bioassay. Eohaustorius and Mytilus sediment water interface (SWI) testing are marine/estuarine organisms and Hyalella and Chironomus are used for freshwater.
TITLE 22 HAZARDOUS WASTE CHARACTERIZATION
Hazardous waste characterization using fathead minnows or rainbow trout. 96 hour survival bioassay to determine the toxicity of solid or aqueous samples.
MICROBIOLOGY
Aquatic Bioassay has a complete microbiology laboratory. We conduct analysis using Coilert or multiple tube methodology.
TIE (TOXICITY IDENTIFICATION AND EVALUATION) PHASE I, II, III
Toxicity identification and evaluation is a process in which samples are subjected to suites of treatments designed to reduce toxicity to a sample for a given class of compounds. Phase I is a broad set of manipulations to encompass the most common classes of compounds. Common phase I compounds include metals, pesticides, herbicides, as well as volatile compounds. Phase II and III treatments get more specific in their targeting and can more closely evaluate a specific toxicant.
TRE WORKPLAN (TOXICITY REDUCTION AND EVALUATION)
Aquatic Bioassay has created toxicity reduction and evaluation (TRE Work Plans) for numerous NPDES clients. We can assist or author the TRE completely. The TRE work plan must follow specific guidelines prescribed in the client's NPDES permit.
CONTACT US TO DISCUSS THE SCOPE OF YOUR PROJECT. LET OUR SEASONED TEAM OF BIOLOGISTS, TOXICOLOGISTS, CHEMISTS AND OCEANOGRAPHERS HANDLE ALL OF YOUR TESTING, ANALYSIS AND REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS.
OUR SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND AND CLIENT PROJECT WORK ARE UNRIVALED IN THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MONITORING COMMUNITY.
TAXONOMIC SERVICES
We provide sorting and identification services for benthic marine, freshwater and estuarine invertebrates, as well as periphyton (algae) and ichthyoplankton.

ANALYZED
SELENASTRUM is a single celled algae found in freshwater. It is used in bioassay testing because it is a very sensitive species to toxicity. The SELENASTRUM bioassay test lasts 96 hours and is enumerated for cell density. It is compared to a negative control and analyzed statistically to see if toxicity is present in a sample.
